GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - Have a sweet tooth? You are in luck because the long-awaited Sweeties has opened.

Located in downtown Gridley, the adorable, sweet shop and bakery greets customers with a be-sprinkled sugar-pink wall and candy-colored interior that elicits excitement and smiles from its customers.

There is something for every taste at Sweeties. The locally-owned shop features artisan baked goods such as cakes, brownies, cookies and sourdough bread, and cool treats for hot summer days such as iced coffee, shaved ice, milkshakes and ice cream. Don’t forget the candy!

Sweeties is brought to the Gridley community by locals Brandi Macfarlane and Cindy Stowe.

Macfarlane, known in the community for her specialty baked goods, treats and catering prowess, lends her creative talents to the shop, creating candy bouquets and custom packages for gifts and birthdays. Stowe is a familiar face behind the counter, owning Cindy’s boutique in Gridley for years.

The Sweeties owners planned for a soft opening Monday, July 22 but were happily surprised when there was a line outside their doors at noon when the shop officially opened.

When the Herald arrived at the shop, it was standing room only, filled with people who had turned out to get a piece of the sugary action.

Sienna Davis, there with her family, said that it was great to “have a shop like this locally” and loved that it was within easy walking distance. Many people have shared the sentiment online in Facebook posts that the town of Gridley needed something like this.

Monday’s “sugar rush” didn’t seem to end. MacFarlane and Stowe reported non-stop customers opening day. At closing, MacFarlane and Stowe were shocked — the baking case at the heart of the shop was left bare and most of their ice cream supply had been decimated.

Not to worry, Sweeties was restocked Tuesday at opening with freshly-made treats and ice cream at the ready.

Sweeties plans to continue soft-opening hours of operation for the next two weeks as they monitor business. A grand opening will be announced in the future, along with social media information for the community to follow.

Sweeties is currently open from 12 to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Sweeties is located at 620 Kentucky St., Gridley.
