SUTTER AND BUTTE COUNTIES, CA (YSBC) - As Westside League play opened up last week, it was a rough go for our two competitors as we had a team pick up a victory since the first week of the season.

Las Plumas 39, Gridley 35 -The Bulldogs started out strong as they hit a two-score lead in the first quarter, but in the end it was the ThunderBirds with the late fourth-quarter attack that sealed their win.

Gridley senior running back Manny Sandoval ran the ball for 200 yards on the ground and found the end zone three times in the loss.

Bulldogs head coach Dan Zumwalt told Yuba Sutter Butte Colusa Sports that the ball-controll issues they have had over the last few weeks has improved and been better.

Senior running back Marcus Duncan added 81 yards on the ground and two scores in the end zone.

Zumwalt said they were able to move the ball efficiently throughout the game, but so was Las Plumas.

Thunderbirds junior quarterback Branden Robinson completed seven passes for 247 yards in the air.

Gridley was able to pick off four passes off Robinson but he found a way late in the game to steal the victory.

The Bulldogs have a tough road test this week as they travel to Orland with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Corning 21, Live Oak 0 - Live Oak dropped their third game in a row and were held scoreless in this stretch for the second time.

The Lions had more than 220 yards of offense in the loss and head coach Robert Tilton expressed to YSBC they struggled when they were in the red zone.

Tilton added that they came out of the game with no major injuries from the game.

Live Oak sophomore quarterback Ethan Petrone completed six passes for 72 yards in the loss.

Lions junior running back Jesus Martinez rushed for 81 yards in the defeat and junior running back Izzy Jurado rushed for 55 yards and hauled in three catches for 44 yards.

The Live Oak rushing attack will need their big offensive-line push this week as the Lions will travel to Harrison Stadium the next two weeks in Oroville.

On Friday, they take on Las Plumas, who defeated Gridley 39-35 on Oct. 9.

Biggs 21, Quincy 13 - The Wolverines snapped their four-game losing streak and ended up in the win column for the first time since the end of August.

Biggs head coach Eddie Del Rio told YSBC that it was good to see his group get a hard-fought road win and one intends to continue the positive momentum.

Wolverines junior Hudson Brewer completed three passes for 97 yards in the air and rushed the ball eight times for 55 yards on the ground.

Biggs senior running back Cashten Actosa had a major offensive day as he rushed for 100 yards and hauled in a 50-yard catch from Brewer.

Defensively the Wolverines got after the quarterback as they had eight total sacks and 11 tackles for loss in the win.

Biggs has a shorter road trip this week as they head to Williams and take on a heavy-run offense.

Del Rio told YSBC that this is a good opportunity for them to make a turn of pace in the Mid-Valley League. He added that he believes they are still in the mix and anything can happen in the MVL.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
