GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - Families are invited to Manuel Vierra Park on Aug. 4 as the Gridley Area Chamber of Commerce, Gridley Police Department and CAL FIRE/Gridley Fire Department host this year's National Night Out from 5 to 8 p.m.
The annual event brings residents together with local law enforcement, firefighters and first responders for an evening of activities designed to strengthen community relationships.
National Night Out began in 1984 as a nationwide effort to encourage positive connections between law enforcement and the communities they serve. In Gridley, the event has expanded to include local fire agencies, service organizations and community groups.
This year's celebration will feature children's crafts and activities, waterslides and live music by Emma & Will.
Several local service organizations also will participate. The Gridley Quota Club will host a backpack and school supply giveaway while the Gridley Lions Club will serve $5 hot dog meals. Food vendors scheduled to attend include Tinoco's Tacos, Daisy Churros and a boba tea truck.
One of the event's most popular attractions is the annual bicycle giveaway, which organizers say has grown each year through donations from local businesses and community members.
The Gridley Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting donations of bicycles of all sizes, as well as scooters and hoverboards, in hopes of making this year's giveaway the largest yet.
Businesses and organizations interested in hosting a vendor or informational booth can obtain applications outside the Gridley Area Chamber of Commerce office at 890 Hazel St. or online at gridleyareachamber.org. For information, call 530-846-3142.
