Children of all ages tackled the giant obstacle course bounce house at Gridley Parks & Recreations revival of Picnic in the Park.
GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - After a one-year hiatus, Picnic in the Park returned to Gridley on Saturday, June 27, with a four-hour event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Using the shaded expanses of Manuel Vierra Park, newly installed Gridley Parks and Recreation Manager Jamie Luevano organized a variety of sports and activities for families to enjoy.
From soccer and basketball to spikeball, volleyball and a "Shoot for the Goal" game inspired by the World Cup, Luevano made use of more of the park than in previous years.
High Jinks Entertainment provided free air-brush tattoos for kiddos enjoying Gridley’s Picnic in the Park.
Angel Jumpers provided an extreme obstacle course inflatable that attracted many of the children in attendance, while the Gridley Lions Club served free barbecue meals to attendees younger than 18.
The event encountered a few obstacles, including unseasonably cool weather that put a stop to the dunk tank, a popular attraction at past events.
"We had about 50 to 70 kids," Luevano said. "It's been slow but steady. Like I said, that's not bad at all."
Grill master Vern Hartman handled dishing up the hot dogs for the Lions Club crew that provided free meals for kiddos at Gridley’s Picnic in the Park. Due to low attendance, GP&R and Lions decided to make meals free for all of those in attendance.
Luevano said he had only about two weeks to promote the event after it did not take place last year. Despite the short notice, he viewed the event as a success and an opportunity to prepare for the future.
"I wanted to make sure we did it so that I know what to anticipate for next year," Luevano said. "It's good for me to experience so that I can build on it for next year."
"Now I know what I want and have a better idea what I want to do next year. That's always helpful," Luevano said with a smile.
