GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - Sacred Heart Catholic Church, located at the corner of Hazel and Oregon streets in Gridley, celebrated its centennial during the weekend of June 12-14, marking 100 years of faith and service to the community.

Father Roland Ramirez, who has led the Sacred Heart congregation for the past 10 years, said the celebrations began with a string quartet concert on June 3.

On Friday evening, Father Roland was joined by Bishop Jaime Soto of the Diocese of Sacramento, who presided over Mass before a reception marking the church's 100th anniversary.

Following Mass, parishioners gathered beneath the new redwood pavilion recently completed behind Parish Hall. The structure was put to use immediately as the centerpiece of the celebration.

Golden balloon arches and a large "100" display, provided by local business Anthony's Balloons, added to the festive atmosphere.

Attendees at the Friday reception witnessed a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new pavilion, heard remarks from clergy members, enjoyed dinner and danced as they celebrated the congregation's century-long history.

"It's a big deal," said Father Roland. "Really, because not many churches reach that milestone."

Father Roland shared some of the factors that have contributed to the closure of other congregations he has encountered, including financial challenges and declining numbers of individuals pursuing religious vocations.

The fact that Sacred Heart has remained strong for so long, he said, is a testament to the community it serves.

After noon Mass on Sunday, June 14, the congregation gathered for another celebration.

Mariachi music, dancing and a variety of Mexican and American dishes were enjoyed by guests as the centennial weekend came to a close.

"It was a joyful occasion, obviously," said Father Roland.

For the priest, however, the milestone also carried a bittersweet note.

Father Roland will move to a new parish in the Galt area at the end of the month. He said his last day in Gridley will be June 30

He had hoped to remain at Sacred Heart through the completion of a second six-year term, totaling 12 years of service, but his assignment will conclude two years earlier than expected.

Reflecting on the transition, Father Roland shared his feelings about leaving the parish community.

"You're sad leaving because you've grown to love and cherish and appreciate the congregation," said Father Roland. "It was kind of a bittersweet feeling, being there and seeing the parishioners enjoying themselves and some being emotional that I'm leaving."

Father Roland leaves behind what he described as a passion project in the new pavilion, which will stand as part of his legacy after a decade of service to Sacred Heart Parish.

He said the project was especially meaningful because both his father and grandfather were carpenters.

"It will be a nice venue," said Father Roland, noting that he hopes the pavilion will host future events that serve as outreach opportunities for the wider Gridley community, regardless of faith, while helping continue the church's legacy for generations to come.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church will welcome Father Joyle Martinez, 61, of the Sacramento area, who will succeed Father Roland when his tenure in Gridley concludes at the end of the month.
