Participants at the Gridley Branch of the Butte County Library’s “Ugly Art Club” met for “Art Roulette”, the creative activity for the month of June.

GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - On Saturday, June 13, some "ugly art" was being made at the Gridley Branch of the Butte County Library.

The Gridley Branch offers a variety of fun events and activities during the summer designed for youth, but it has also been expanding its offerings for adults.

This weekend, the Ugly Art Club met for its June gathering in the library's activity room. The small group of attendees took advantage of the quiet environment to enjoy a creative and relaxing time painting, with all supplies provided by the library.

Artists painted abstract images, then passed their pieces on to and their neighbors who added their own artistic contributions. The results were colorful, surreal art-scapes.

Each month, participants explore a different art style or medium. For June, the theme was "paint roulette."

Participants began their own paintings and, when a timer sounded, passed their artwork to the person on their left. The next artist then added something new before the painting was passed again. The result was a collaborative piece, with each participant contributing something unique to the final work.

"This is a judgment-free adult art club," said a Butte County Library staff member who directed the event.

Participants in “Art Roulette” had a few minutes to start their painting, before a timer asked them to pass it to the participant on their left. Once the paintings were passed, artists were asked to add their contribution to the piece.

"This is one of the library's programs that caters to the adult socialization aspect," he continued.

The club provides an opportunity for adults to gather, be creative and connect with others in a relaxed setting while experimenting with different artistic techniques.

The Ugly Art Club is open to adults 18 and older. Upcoming sessions will focus on adventure journals, with watercolor projects to follow.

Library staff reminded participants that adult programs will pause during August 2026 but will resume in September.
