GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - CAL FIRE Butte County Fire invites the community to the annual North vs. South softball game, set for Friday, May 15 at Vierra Park.

The tradition dates back to 2003, when the first game was held the night before Red Suspenders Day. In recent years, the matchup has featured the North vs. South Butte County Fire teams.

The rivalry began in 2005, when firefighters from northern Butte County challenged crews from the southern portion of the county, roughly divided along Highway 149, to a slow-pitch game. The North claimed the first win, 20-17. The South responded the following year with a 10-9 victory and currently holds the trophy bat after a 36-32 win in 2025.

In addition to the North vs. South matchup, Butte County Fire and Sutter County Fire will face off in a second game. Butte has held the edge in recent years, but Sutter enters looking to turn the tide.

A home run derby will take place prior to the second game, with players competing in a winner-take-all format.

First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The event serves as a chance for local firefighters to build camaraderie, stay active and connect with the community ahead of fire season.
