LIVE OAK, CA (MPG) – Two Live Oak Unified School District campuses have earned national recognition for advancing college and career readiness, joining a select group of schools across the country.
Luther Elementary School and Encinal School have been named AVID National Demonstration Schools, a designation that highlights campuses where strategies tied to student achievement and academic preparation are embedded across all grade levels and classrooms.
The AVID program, short for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a national system focused on preparing students for postsecondary success through structured academic support and a student-centered approach. Demonstration Schools serve as model sites, allowing educators from other districts to observe practices in action.
At Luther and Encinal, AVID methods include focused note-taking, inquiry-based instruction, student-led tutorials and goal-setting practices integrated into daily lessons. School leaders said the approach is applied campuswide rather than limited to a single program.
“This recognition reflects the dedication of our staff and students to a culture where high expectations and meaningful support go hand in hand,” said Luther Elementary Principal Parveen Bains. “At Luther, AVID is not a program, it is a commitment to ensuring every student has the skills, confidence and opportunity to succeed.”
Encinal School Principal Michelle Smith said the designation reinforces the belief that all students can succeed with the right tools and support.
“We are proud to model what AVID in action looks like every day at Encinal,” Smith said.
As Demonstration Schools, both campuses will host visiting educators from across the region and country, offering classroom observations and opportunities to engage with staff and students.
AVID, a nonprofit organization founded more than 45 years ago, operates in more than 7,400 schools nationwide and internationally, reaching millions of students through its programs and educator training.
