Tournament Season Kicks Off in Full Swing

SUTTER AND BUTTE COUNTIES, CA (YSBC) - The first complete weekend of basketball tournaments concluded last weekend and each weekend for the rest of 2025, boys and girls’ basketball squads will be playing multiple back-to-back games.

Yuba Sutter Butte Colusa Sports looks forward to covering all 24 of our teams in this time span to share highlights with great performances and notable milestones.

Girls Basketball

Live Oak - The Live Oak Lions program is an upcoming program as they are within one victory of having as many wins as they did in 2024-25. Live Oak’s athletic department has made changes throughout multiple programs throughout the last few seasons.

The Lions picked up their first win of the season in the opening round of the Lois Langford tournament with an impressive win over Bradshaw Christian.

Live Oak head coach Ty Prince expressed to YSBC that he is focused on a strong defensive presence and that it will come over time.

The Lions picked up their second win of the season with a 48-point win over Williams on Monday night.

Gridley - The Gridley Bulldogs picked up two victories last weekend in their Lady Bulldog classic. 

Gridley forced a lot of turnovers in the East Nicolaus game and capitalized on some easy buckets and multiple outlet passes.

The Bulldogs are led by a pair of sophomores, Iris Counihan and Madi Carey as the top two scorers on the roster.

Gridley head coach Becca McCray told YSBC that she is excited for what this season will bring and can’t wait to continue it.

Boys’ basketball

Live Oak - The Live Oak Lions begin year two of the rebuild process under head coach Anthony Ellis.

Ellis expressed that he has a talented group this year and they will be highly competitive.

The veteran-heavy squad has plenty of experience and is hosting their annual tournament throughout the weekend.
