GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - The American Legion was founded in 1919 by World War I veterans in Paris, France, and chartered by Congress to support veterans and their families.
Our mission is built on four pillars: Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism and Children and Youth. Our key achievements include advocating for the creation of the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), playing a role in the GI Bill of Rights for veterans, establishing Boys and Girls State and Boys Nation to promote leadership and advocating for Flag protection.
South Butte Post 210 was established in 1923, born in battle from World War I. Several prominent original veterans from Gridley were Sam Hern, Charles Burleson, WL Winston, Arthur Serene, WI Block, HG Seregin, JF Presley, Preston Williston, Archie Warson, WG Evans, LD Craig, Clyde Hamer, Sam Roth, CE Bullard, JA Justeson Jr, GL Chalmers and JM Carde. You may recognize some of these WW1 veterans. Simply put, the American Legion generally accepts Veterans of the US Military no matter where they served
South Butte Post recently returned to Gridley Memorial Hall after a lengthy absence due to hall damage.
We have grown from our original group of veterans and Auxiliary to include the Sons of the American Legion (SAL) and the American Legion Riders. Our roster includes four veterans from the Korea Conflict, twenty-five Vietnam veterans and eleven veterans from the Global War on Terrorism.
Bill Bebensee a Korean War has been a member for over 70 plus years and was recently recognized by the National American Legion for his longevity as a member of Post 210.
For over 100 years we have contributed to local, State and Nation programs. Several of our current Children and Youth programs include an Oratorical Contest, High School scholarships and Boys and Girls State. We contribute to the Tunnel to Towers program and service dog programs, as well as contributing to veterans in need.
Our American Legion Riders group has established an annual Warren McCutchin Poker Run. This next year we are hoping to establish an American Little League baseball program.
