GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - Motorists in Gridley have raised concerns regarding the ongoing Highway 99 sidewalk improvement project, specifically highlighting the deep and steep entrances to shopping centers along the route.
City Council member Catalina Sanchez brought the issue to the council during their regular meeting on Sept. 15, asking staff to address comments on social media by users who have described the entrances as challenging to navigate, likening the experience to “four-wheel driving” in small cars due to the notable pavement dips.
“It’s a pretty deep pocket, almost like a pothole,” said Sanchez, voicing a concern for claims filed against the city.
City officials said the concern lies in the safety and accessibility of these entrances, as well as the risk of vehicle damage or accidents.
The project, managed by Caltrans and executed by Martin Brothers Construction, is expected to conclude by 2026.
City Administrator Elisa Arteaga acknowledged the concerns and confirmed that she has reached out to the city engineer and public works staff to actively monitor the site during construction. Arteaga has also reached out to the Caltrans project manager and the construction contractor to request remediation measures such as adding fill to smooth out the steep entrance areas.
While the city encourages residents to report any incidents related to the pavement issues, Arteaga emphasized that Caltrans will be held to related liabilities.
Meanwhile, Gridley officials said they remain committed to ensuring public safety and are pushing for timely resolution of these concerns. Council members also noted that once completed, the improved sidewalks and planned lighting enhancements are expected to beautify the area and improve safety for pedestrians and drivers alike.
