Gridley and Biggs with Big Wins as Live Oak Loses Nail Biter

SUTTER & BUTTE COUNTIES, CA (YSBC) – After four weeks of football competition in California completed this past weekend, this was the first time that Biggs, Gridley and Live Oak all played the same week.
Biggs
The Biggs Wolverines got back to their winning ways as they shutout the Highlands Scots of the Sac-Joaquin Section with a 27-0 win on Friday, Sept. 12.
Biggs head coach Brian Harrison expressed to Yuba Sutter Butte Colusa Sports that the Wolverines that things seem to be back on track after they suffered a 26-6 at the hands of the Redding Christian Lions on Sept. 5.
Harrison added that multiple players produced for Biggs against Highlands. Wolverines senior quarterback Skyler Long completed 12 passes for 187 yards on the air and tossed two touchdowns. Long also had a rushing touchdown along with 53 yards on the ground.
Biggs had nearly 400 yards of offense and the balanced attack included 105 yards on the ground by junior Cashten Acosta. Acosta also led the Wolverines with four receptions for 73 yards and one of the touchdown passes from Long.

Harrison told YSBC that the defense is back to its old tricks of flustering opposing offenses. Biggs junior linebacker Cameron Kroupa terrorized the Highlands offense with 11 tackles and Long had 10 tackles with two for a loss.
Wolverines junior linebacker Ayden Owen and senior Jordan Zamora had nine tackles each, including a tackle for loss.
Biggs is scheduled to play at Durham on Friday, Sept. 19 with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Harrison said the matchup with Durham is bigger than the Super Bowl for him.
Gridley
The Gridley Bulldogs arguably had the biggest win of Northern Section teams on Friday, Sept. 12 as they took down the Winters Warriors in a 21-20 victory.
Gridley was down 20-6 at the end of the first half and roared back in the second with multiple stops defensively in the second half.
Bulldogs head coach Daniel Zumwalt told YSBC that he was proud of the way the boys battled back and overcame the early adversity.

He added that it was a whole team effort and excited to keep the early momentum going. Gridley junior running back Manny Sandoval led the way with 87 yards on the ground.
Bulldogs junior running back Marcus Duncan had 57 yards rushing and senior quarterback Eli Punzo rushed for 63 yards. Duncan and Punzo each had a rushing touchdown in the win.
The Gridley defense chopped the ball away from Winters as they forced four turnovers, including a fumble recovery and three interceptions.
Duncan had 10 tackles and Punzo had an interception. Senior defensive end Jason Davis Jr. had 10 total tackles, six for a loss and sack while junior linebackers Saulo Ramirez and Benny Dewsnup had 14 tackles each.
The Bulldogs look to make it three in a row as they travel to Colusa on Friday, Sept. 19 at Colusa with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Live Oak
The Live Oak Lions came up just short for their first victory of 2025 as they fell to the Paradise Bobcats 33-27 on Friday, Sept. 12.
Live Oak head coach Robert Tilton told YSBC once they were successful with running the ball, they were vibing well. Lions senior quarterback Bradley Perigo completed nine passes for 115 yards in the air and nearly had 100 rushing yards on the ground.

Live Oak senior running back Ian Miranda had 118 yards of rushing and led the Lions in the loss.
Tilton expressed that there was a big improvement from the first game against Anderson on Sept. 5 and the goal continues to be getting better each week.
Live Oak is scheduled to host an angry and tough Winters team, who suffered their first regular season loss since the 2023 season.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19.
