GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - The City of Gridley participated in National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 5, partnering with local law enforcement.
Families turned out despite the sunny and toasty evening, drawn by the delicious food, activities and fun that made for an amazing night.
The air was filled with excitement as the various food and craft vendors were setting up. Families started arriving and were eager to participate in the many activities. The delightful music invited everyone to enjoy the night.
Cal FIRE firefighters were on hand to talk with the kids and hand out firefighter hats. Gridley Police Department was also passing out items to the kids and a chance to sit in a real police cruiser.
Community partners were available and ready to talk and answer questions. Some of the community partners in attendance were Gridley Chamber of Commerce, Gridley Post Acute, Gridley Parks and Recreation, City of Gridley, Orchard Hospital, Warm Hearts Caregiving and the American Lung Association. There were various churches providing crafts and tasty, refreshing snow cones.
Community clubs were on hand as well. Gridley Lions Club passed out goodies to the youngsters and the Quota Club gave away an abundant number of backpacks. The backpacks were a hit with the kids and their parents.
Of course, no event would be complete without fun activities. There was face painting, balloon animals, photo booths, spray tattoos and a water slide. The Splash Pad was open and the kids were happy to cool down and have fun.
The highlight of the night was the bicycle giveaway by the Gridley Chamber of Commerce. Over 30 bicycles, scooters, a hoverboard and bike lights were donated by local businesses and community members.
The bicycles were on display throughout the night and each child completed a form by visiting several booths. After completing the form, they received a ticket to place in a bag attached to the bicycle they would like to win.
Butte County Supervisor Tod Kimmelshue, helped by Congressman Doug LaMalfa, pulled ticket after ticket from a hat, announcing each winner as the evening drew to a close.
