Late Surge Lifts Lassen Over Gridley

GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - The Gridley Bulldogs baseball team lost in their second-round matchup against the Lassen Grizzlies.

The Lassen Grizzlies traveled to Gridley on Friday, May 16 for their playoff matchup. After a 1-0 start for the Grizzlies, pitchers Tanner Abbott (Gridley), and Tony Carvalho (Lassen) produced a strong showing of pitching and when a ball was hit, the strong defenses from both teams held.

The 1-0 Lassen lead held until the bottom of the sixth inning when senior Luis Murillo scored after being batted in by senior Gus Stogsdill. That run tied the game 1-1 setting up a tense seventh inning. As the Bulldogs took the field, junior Eli Punzo looked to close the game for the Bulldogs as he took over pitching duties. This change would prove to be costly for the Bulldogs, as the Grizzlies scored 4 runs and pushed the score to 5-1 forcing the Bulldogs to need to summon up some offense that had been missing up to that point. That offense would not be found and the Bulldogs would lose the game 5-1 as the Grizzlies celebrated their advancement in the playoffs.

Although the Bulldogs lost, their season is not over. The Bulldogs will face the West Valley Eagles in West Valley on Tuesday, May 20, after press time. If the Bulldogs win, they will face the loser of Lassen vs Yreka with a chance to advance to the division championship game.
