GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - For Volunteer Day’s 10th year on April 26, Libby Tolman rounded up four beautification projects. Volunteers came out, despite the rainy morning, and worked to beautify the community.
Maggie Hepworth recently led the volunteers at the Post Office, cutting back the ivy from the front of the building and weeding the planter beds.
Bob Bowling, from the Gridley Rotary Club, led the workers at the library, trimming bushes, ripping the overgrown ivy from the plants, and weeding the rocks around the trees.
Volunteer Ione Cunningham remembered planting the redwoods in the southeast corner years ago in another youth-led project.
“If it wouldn’t kill everything, it would be fine,” said Cunningham about the ivy removal.
Gridley High School Interact Club members said that they wanted to help the Gridley community by creating a place for residents to comfortably relax.
The Interact Club members also organized a literacy night at Wilson Elementary and built a float for the downtown Christmas parade. They will also volunteer at Red Suspenders Day.
Max Tolman, from the Gridley High School Leadership, led the project at the fire department. Students worked with Rob Kenyon from CAL FIRE on refurbishing the west planter, tearing out the old weed barrier, placing new landscape fabric and planting ornamental grasses.
In addition, Miss Butte County Scholarship Program members planted flower barrels at the fairgrounds.
Tolman, a local communication volunteer for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, organized the event. In previous years, most volunteers have worked on projects at the fairgrounds. This year, the fair didn’t have the funding for needed projects.
“The community looks forward to this every year,” Tolman said.
If anyone would like to be on the projects list for next year, Tolman said to contact her at 530-966-3885.
