GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) – On the first Saturday every month, Gridley residents can attend a free food preservation class at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 410 Jackson St., Gridley. The class runs from 10 a.m. to noon.

Last Saturday, attendees were taught step by step how to preserve jams and jellies. Jam was prepared and packed in Mason jars and then placed in canners to process. Several hot plates were running different kinds of preserves, such as strawberry jam and peach conserve. Jars were removed from the canners and the products were available to taste when the class concluded.

Kathy Mahannah is one of the women who began the “Preserving Food with Friends” class.

Handouts with recipes and tips were available to everyone.

Kathy Mahannah, Grace Mahannah and Brianna Swanson started the “Preserving Food with Friends” class. Most of the class members agreed that the taste of homemade preserves was better than store-bought preserves.

In April, the class will learn about sauerkraut.
