The Sutter Buttes Family Orchestra held a 10th anniversary performance on Dec. 13.

GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - A special Christmas concert honoring the Sutter Buttes Family Orchestra’s 10th year of performance was held Friday, Dec. 13, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The program consisted of all the orchestra members’ favorite pieces, with narration by Norm and Dax Lessard and Nash Benson.

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” was featured, complete with a visit from the Grinch himself. Mark Johnson, who played the Grinch, also served as choreographer. He has helped out for many years in various capacities, according to orchestra conductor Carol Brown, who added, “He is amazing.”

Guest conductor John Paul Bowers led some of the songs. Bowers is a music major and composer, hoping for acceptance to San Diego State University.

Soloist Kari Wheeler sang “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”

The “Nutcracker Medley” was accompanied by ballerinas Allie and Torah Christensen up on the stage, plus a life-size nutcracker.

The audience joined in for carols “The First Noel” and “Joy to the World,” as well as the Hallelujah Chorus from the Messiah at the very end.

Immediately thereafter, Santa and Mrs. Claus, played by Ron and Pat Scheyer, made a guest appearance. Children sat on Santa’s lap and many pictures were taken.

“We have such amazing musicians, and they are all so talented. Everyone worked really hard,” Brown said.

This will be the last performance for Brown for a while. She and her husband, Jim, are leaving in January for an 18-month mission to Orlando, Florida, for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Orchestra members Joanie Grover and Ethan Jacobsen will be in charge during Brown’s absence.

Brown also praised the audience and community for their support. Orchestra pianist Heather Payne and Children’s Hope did the decorations. Publicity was handled by Cindy Scott and Christy Brown. Monetary donations have completely covered the expenses for sheet music, according to Brown.

The orchestra welcomes new members, including those who have an instrument in the closet from high school days. Brown indicated that getting back into practice doesn’t take long.

“I’ll miss everybody and the music,” Brown said. “It’s really like a family.”
