BIGGS, CA (MPG) - With a flurry of snow and a flip of a switch, Biggs celebrated the start of the holiday season last Sunday, Dec. 1.

The first tree lighting in the area was brought to the community again by Project Biggs and a host of dedicated volunteers.

Traditions keep growing for the small-town holiday. This year, the event featured more than 50 vendors selling homemade gifts and treats, with music and laughter echoing through the crowds that shopped their booths.

In preparation of the event, the local 4-H group wrapped the downtown trees in colorful lights, Biggs Public Works hung flags and additional decorations, while families such as the Bastianis, Wilks and Culversons lent more than a helping hand and individuals such as Kendall Lair Milburn and Brian Bassett helped emcee some of the evening’s happenings.

It was a magical night in Biggs last Sunday as the town celebrated with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting.

One such happening was the Ugly Sweater Contest. This year, participants were again voted on by the crowd, with winners smiling in delight at having the most horrible garb.

Snow fell from the skies above the Hotel Colonia while children danced in the street. Selfies with Santa brought plenty of visitors to Santa and Mrs. Claus for pictures and more.

Santa flipped the switch and lit Biggs’ red and gold tree, wishing all a happy start to the Christmas season.

Marci Shadd, the Project Biggs foreperson and owner and operator of the Hotel Colonia, which often serves as a focal point for the Biggs Christmas Street Fair & Tree Lighting, spearheads the event. Shadd thanked all the individuals and groups making the event a success once again. Some of those mentioned included Nacho Villanueva from Nacho’s Electric, Luis Cibrian from Need to Go Luxury Restrooms, Shana Roles, Susan, Jenny, Ricki, Raymie, Norma Todd and a heartfelt thanks to all who attended.
