GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - On Sunday Oct. 6, the Hispanic Resource Council of Northern California (HRCNC) hosted Dia Del Campesino in Gridley’s Daddow Park.
Dia Del Campesino, or “day of the farmer” celebrates the workers that have played essential roles in agriculture.
According to President Reyna Nolta of the HRCNC, the HRCNC was founded in 1983 and held the first Dia Del Campesino in the region back in 1988.
Gridley has not hosted the event for some time, mostly due to restrictions the COVID pandemic put on public events. The event now rotates between being held in Chico, Hamilton City and Gridley on a three-year cycle.
Nolta shares that her team’s health and general resource services are offered to the community, and “at the same time have a beautiful day with cultural food, music and clean fun for the whole family.” Nolta said.
This year Gridley was treated to exactly that, including traditional dance performances, a visit from a member of the Mexican Consulate and a free vaccination clinic provided by Orchard Hospital.
The Council worked with partners Si Se Puede, Far Northern Regional Center and the United Way to bring Dia Del Campesino to the Gridley community this year. Special thanks to the Sikh Center who funded and administered free COVID vaccines and Orchard Hospital for the flu vaccinations – all of which were free to the public.
Correction - In the Oct. 4, edition of the Gridley Herald, the article “Community Shows Gratitude for Dia Del Campesino” credited the wrong organizations and/or persons with the organization of the event. The Herald would like to clarify that Dia Del Campesino was brought to the Gridley community by the Hispanic Resource Council of Northern California, Si Se Puede, the Far Northern Regional Center and the United Way and its numerous in-kind donations made this day possible. Although there was support from many volunteers, members of those agencies were the driving force for the event's success in the community.
