REDDING, CA (MPG) - The Biggs Wolverines baseball season ended on Saturday, May 18, as they lost a heartbreaker against the Redding Christian Lions 6-5 in the CIF Northern Section Division VI title.
Biggs head coach Alan Lee expressed to the Herald that this was a special group of guys and has said it multiple times throughout the season.
Lee added that he was incredibly proud of this team and will miss and cherish a lot of the conversations and memories this team made this season.
Lee told the Herald it was a couple of crooked innings that gave Redding Christian the victory.
The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning as senior pitcher/infielder Zach Smith hit a run-batted-in (RBI) single.
Smith started the game on the mound for Biggs and Lee told the Herald it was a tight strike zone for both sides.
The Lions took the lead in the bottom half of the third after Smith quickly got the first two outs of the inning. After a couple walks and a couple hits, the Wolverines were down 3-1.
Lee brought in freshman utility Dennis Dewhurst to relieve Smith in the fourth where he struck out the first two batters.
In the top of the fifth, Biggs junior outfielder Davis Long obliterated a ball over the centerfield fence to give the Wolverines a 4-3 lead.

Dewhurst eased through the fifth and sixth inning as he retired six hitters in a row. Biggs added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Dewhurst hit an RBI double to extend the Wolverines lead 5-3.
In the blink of the eye in the bottom of the seventh the game was tied as Redding Christian drew two walks and hit a couple singles before the first out was recorded.
Long relieved Dewhurst with runners on first and second with no outs and got a Lion hitter to hit an infield fly. After a double steal attempt, the runner heading to third was thrown out.
With two outs and a runner on second, Long surrendered a double and Redding Christian walked off with the championship.
Lee told the Herald countless times, although it didn’t go their way, that this was the best team he has ever coached and he was proud of every single individual on the roster.
