This weekend the fun starts off with the traditional Firemen’s Baseball Games on Friday, May 17 at Manuel Vierra Park. CALFIRE/Butte County north county will take on south county. Allstars from that game will play a double-header against Sutter Fire Department after a short break. During the intermission, a home-run derby will be held.
Saturday, May 18, the Gridley Little League will start the RSD festivities by hosting a fundraising pancake breakfast in Railroad Park, downtown Gridley.
Then things will get really competitive as 6 bed-race teams will take to Vermont Street, racing for the win. This year Bed Race participants will see a bit more structure as the bed races take on a more serious edge, while maintaining the goofy fun.
Just before the parade, a new event will take place – the first responders costume contest for children in grades K-2. Children are invited to design and create first responder vehicles out of cardboard boxes for a chance at a $25 price. After the contest, they will have the opportunity to join the parade with an adult chaperone.
The parade will kick off at 11:00 a.m. A large list of entries will entertain guests, including a wide variety of Fire apparatus.
The Gridley Lions will host another new event after the parade – the Marshmallow Olympics. Following that, crowds will gather for the traditional fireman games at Rotary Park.
The Gridley Museum Tri-Tip Dinner will wrap up the day’s events. From 4:00 -7:00 p.m., the community is asked to support this museum fundraiser. The dinner is a drive through and $25/plate.
The public is invited to come out to this free community celebration. Over 110 vendors will be joining the RSD festivities this year. Whether is food, gifts, crafts of information, downtown will be full of something for everyone!
Red Suspenders Day arrives.
