Gridley
GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - The Gridley High School girls’ softball team traveled to Redding on Tuesday for the opening round of the CIF Northern Section Division IV as they took on University Prep this past Tuesday, May 9.
Gridley drew the seventh seed in the D-IV bracket as they tied with Butte View League foe Orland for the sixth ranking in the NSCIF D-IV playoff points system.
With the Lady Bulldogs dropping the second meeting against Orland in BVL play, Gridley finished third in the league standings and was the reason Orland got the higher seed in the playoffs.
Gridley (14-6) head coach Tammy Carr expressed to the Herald that she is confident in her team to play with anyone.
University Prep (24-4) finished second in the Northern League. The common opponents between the two schools are Orland and West Valley.
The Lady Bulldogs dropped a 6-0 game to West Valley in the middle of March at the Field of Dreams tournament in Redding.
In the final week of the regular season, Gridley dropped games to Las Plumas 10-1 and Orland 9-8.
Carr told the Herald that was a tough one to drop at Orland in the season finale, but it had a playoff feel and was a learning experience for her team.
This is the second consecutive year the Lady Bulldogs have made it to the playoffs as they lost in the opening round of the D-IV bracket last season to Colusa.
The positive note for Gridley is they have the taste of playoff experience and this group of senior led Lady Bulldogs was ready to give it all they had.
Gridley senior catcher Gracie Dunning is the leading hitter, but also has a great supporting cast as the Lady Bulldogs had eight hitters in their roster with 15 or more hits during the regular season.
Gridley junior pitcher Maddie Garcia has gone 3-2 in her last five starts. The Lady Bulldogs have improved this season with three more wins than they did last season. This is the first .500 and above season for Gridley since the 2006 spring season!
Live Oak
LIVE OAK, CA (MPG) - The Live Oak High School girls’ softball team missed out on the playoffs this season as they ranked 13th out of 15th place in the CIF Northern Section Division IV playoff points rankings.
Live Oak played its final regular season game on Thursday, May 11, where they got beat 11-1 by Anderson.
The Lady Lions look to bounce back into the playoffs next season as head coach Kevin Mederios continues to build the program up and plant his seed on Live Oak being a stable program.
Live Oak graduates one senior and brings back plenty of talented players next season in hopes of making another push for the playoffs.
The seven wins this season was the second most games that were won (7) during the season by the program since the 2017 spring season.
