GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - Over the weekend of February 4th, the Gridley Gladiators traveled south to Sacramento to compete in the SAWA State Championships, the last of the youth tournaments for their club.
Of course, the youth wrestlers continued to do well. Taking first place in their weight classes was Morgan Ruggirello and Emmett Burns. Brady Rogers would place in two different weigh classes, bringing home a 2nd and 3rd place medal. Clairyssa Watkins medaled again, securing 3rd place.
Coach Ruggirello says, “This season has been very special to me. It is my second season as head coach.” Ruggirello shared that the previous year, he had 20 youth wrestlers with only 6 returning. “This year we had a great turnout with a little over 40 kids, from kindergarten to 8th grade.” He continued, “the decision to wrestle is a big decision – it’s not for everyone, it’s a tough sport. In the end, most of them stuck with it.”
Ryan Burns, who acted as his assistant coach said the Gladiators were “a wonderful group of kids and a great program.” His son Emmett was a Gladiator and Burns shares how much his son grew over the season with Coach Ruggirello’s “outstanding job” heading the program, learning new skills and sportsmanship. Rugirello said, “For me it’s not about winning. It’s about listening and being a good sport, win or lose.”
Ruggirello looks forward to a bigger turnout next year and thanks the community and surrounding communities for a great season.
