YUBA CITY, CA (MPG) - Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Gridley Post 5731 honored a police detective on Wednesday, January 25. Ed Kawasaki, David Yadon, and Noris Anderson presented Michael Aguilar with the year award. This is an annual award that is given to local law enforcement officers who demonstrate dedication and valor in the line of duty. The award with given in a small private ceremony at the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office.
Aguilar grew up locally and is a graduate of Lindhurst High School as well as a Yuba College alumni. He has worked for the Sutter County Sheriff’s Department for 14 years. He lives with his wife Daisy and their 13-year-old son. A new baby will soon be welcomed to the family. He is a graduate of the Police Academy at Yuba College. His credentials include being a member of the SWAT team, Special Enforcement Detail Team, and being a certified active shooter trainer. He was promoted to detective in 2021.
In addition to these credentials, Aguilar has stood out in several recent cases. One was solving a high profile vehicular manslaughter case. He was also noted for his speedy responses in providing first aid to a traffic victim and saving another person from choking by using CPR.
The VFW recognizes a law enforcement office every year and this year Aguilar was nominated by Sheriff Brandon Barnes. “Michael takes every opportunity to collaborate with community members and Sheriff’s Office personnel to assist and volunteer his time for nonprofit organizations. Michael has recently volunteered for a Shady Creek fundraiser, Shop with a Cop, Kiwanis Club events, and several school engagements with children,” read the Sheriff’s recommendation letter.
These accomplishments have stood out and Aguilar has also been selected for the VFW Peace Officer of the Year Award which he will receive in March. Still, Aguilar is focused on the main reason he chose the career that he has. “We get into law enforcement not for the recognition, but for what we do for the community,” said Aguilar. “A Really big thank you to everyone on the department LT Mann, Lt. Gill and Sheriff Barnes for all the work that they do.”
