ORLAND, CA (MPG) – The Live Oak varsity football team lost its eighth straight game on Thursday night in the first round of the 2022 Division III Northern Section CIF Football Playoffs, subsequently ending the Lions’ season.

Live Oak (3-8) entered the postseason tournament as the No. 8 seed against top-ranked Orland (11-0). The Lions were on the wrong end of a lopsided loss Thursday, falling to the Trojans 46-8.

Orland scored 20 points in the first quarter, 14 in the second and 12 in the third to lead 46-0 going into the final 12 minutes of play. Live Oak was able to avoid the shutout with a touchdown pass followed by a successful two-point conversion rushing attempt midway through the fourth period.

The Trojans will host No. 4 ranked Lassen (6-5) of Susanville in the semifinals of the postseason bracket on Friday night at 7 p.m.

Orland racked up all its total yards on the ground Thursday night, tallying 360 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 30 carries. The Trojans averaged an impressive 12 yards per carry.

Junior running back Diego Rico recorded a game-high six rushes for 115 yards and four touchdowns. Rico averaged a remarkable 19.2 yards per rush. Junior quarterback Connor Ovard attempted one pass for Orland against Live Oak and it fell incomplete.

Two Trojans recorded tackles in the double digits. Rico, who also plays free safety, and junior outside linebacker Christian Padilla each had 10 tackles and half a sack. The Live Oak statistics were unavailable as of press time.

Nearly half of the Lions will be graduating in the spring. Twenty out of 47 Live Oak players are in the Class of 2023.
