YUBA CITY, CA (MPG) - On Sunday, Feb. 20, youth from the local chapter of the Navy Sea Cadets had the opportunity to participate in aviation activities led by experienced pilots.  The crew, many of whom were Navy veterans, flew into Yuba City to meet the local youth and their families. Three of the pilots were women and there is hope to encourage girls to pursue aviation and aeronautics.

The Cadets were shown various small airplanes and helicopters, including a 2-seater plane from the World War 2 era.  One highlight of the experience was when each of the 40 cadets were able to take turns being flown over the Sutter Buttes. Some even chose to livestream it on Facebook.

The Sea Cadets is a nationwide youth organization sponsored by the U.S Navy.  While not officially part of the military cadets (ages 10-18) they regularly participate in drills and physical training.  Younger cadets (10-14) make up the T.S Randy Goodman division while 10- to 14-year-olds belong to the Mathew Axelson Division

In addition to physical training there are classes on various topics from mechanics to resume writing. Some cadets even elect to undertake more advanced military style training.  Any teen who completes the program can enlist in the military at an advanced rank should they choose to do so. Cadets come from a variety of different backgrounds. “Everyone is equal when they put on that uniform,” says Lt. Sherry Herkal, who leads the Sea Cadet chapter.

Herkal makes sure that all potential cadets have the chance to be included.  There are some fees for membership and uniforms, but local individuals and groups have made donation or sponsored individual youth.  Sea Cadets has paid this forward, and volunteering is another of their values. They have recently been involved with assisting local veterans and military families.
