Biggs High School Basketball Sweeps Maxwell Homecoming Night

BIGGS, CA (MPG) - Biggs High School basketball held an all-day basketball marathon against Maxwell High School on Friday, February 7, 2020. The JV Lady Wolverines tipped off first against the JV Lady Panthers in a blowout of a game. Improving to 16-3 overall on the season, the Lady Wolverines won by a score of 51-13. In the next game, the JV boys team tipped off in a close battle. By the final buzzer, the JV Wolverines won 58-45 to improve to 16-5 overall on the season.
When the varsity Lady Wolverines hit the court the fans began to fill the stands in preparation for Homecoming celebrations. The Lady Wolverines jumped out to a 15-5 lead to end the first quarter. Freshman Brianna Rodriguez, knocked down back to back 3-point shots to lead the Lady Wolverines scoring in the first quarter. A low scoring second quarter had the Lady Wolverines leading 19-10 going into halftime. Another 15 point third quarter, led by sophomore Baylee Bowles, with seven points, had the Lady Wolverines ahead 34-21. Another low scoring fourth quarter led to a 38-32 victory for the Lady Wolverines.
Before the varsity boys basketball game tipped off for the final game of the marathon, Biggs High School held their Homecoming celebrations in front of a packed crowd. This year’s king and queen candidates were Blake McLean and Emily Brown, Andrew Wylie and Maedean Sharrock, and Xavier Sanchez and Gracie Felkins. Big congratulations to varsity basketball players Xavier Sanchez and Gracie Felkins on being crowned Homecoming king and queen.
When the varsity boys' basketball game tipped off, the Wolverines immediately realized it would be a tough battle against the Panthers. Each team traded back and forth baskets, with Biggs’ Cali Navarro dropping 10 points in the first quarter with a number of 3-point shots. At the end of the first, the Wolverines were ahead 18-16. In the second quarter, senior Blake McLean, got the hot hand with 12 points. At halftime, the Wolverines were down 37-38.
In his first game as a varsity basketball player, sophomore Cody Roles, really stepped into his role and found his groove in the second half. The Wolverines retook the lead in the third quarter 53-51 with Roles dropping eight points. Roles continued his momentum in his varsity debut with another eight point quarter. Junior Gregg Slusser also found his groove in the game dropping seven points to help secure the 75-64 victory over the Panthers.
Roles led the team in scoring with 26 points. In his first varsity game, Roles felt humbled when asked to play. “I came into this game not thinking I was going to score as much as I did. I just wanted to move the ball around and do something for the team.” Roles adds strength and height under the basket for the team. McLean added 24 points in his last homecoming game as a Wolverine. When asked how he felt about playing in front of a packed crowd Homecoming night, he said, “It’s really amazing having all the fans come out. It really gets the team boosted with energy and gives us something to look forward to and win.”
With that win, the Wolverines improved to 6-2 in league play, sitting tied for second place in the Mountain Valley League.
