BIGGS, CA (MPG) - Biggs High School Lady Wolverines hosted their annual Mel McLaughlin Invitational Girls Basketball Tournament this past week. The Lady Wolverines faced off against the Loyalton Grizzlies on Thursday, December 5th, for their first matchup in the tournament. The entire game was a back and forth nail-biter from tip off. The Lady Wolverines press defense looked good early in the game. And the strong leadership from senior, Gracie Felkins, kept the offense and defense energized and playing tough. At halftime, the Lady Wolverines led by a score of 27-24 with strong play from Felkins, junior Megan Shelton, and senior Nikeishia Gilcrease. Each quarter in the second half was within a basket, and the Lady Wolverines won by a total of 47-42. Felkins put up 33 points with help from Shelton who had 8 points.

On Thursday, December 6th, the Lady Wolverines tipped off against the Etna Lions. From tip off things seemed to go the way for the Lions, who got out to a commanding 15-5 lead after the first quarter. Shooting Guard, Felkins, did all she could to keep her team in the game, but Etna proved to be stronger in the paint, scoring rebound after rebound over the Lady Wolverines. At halftime, Etna led by a score of 29-15 and continued the run in the second half. The Lady Wolverines saw their first loss in the tournament by a score of 55-36. Felkins again led the team in scoring with 27 points.

On Saturday, December 7th, the Lady Wolverines hit the court again and faced off against East Nicolaus. The Lady Spartans put the Lady Wolverines in a hole early and proved too much in the end. East Nicolaus went on to win the game by a score of 47-38. Felkins again led the team in scoring with 24 points. Shelton contributed with 6 points.

The Lady Wolverines finished in 4th place in the tournament. The Etna Lions swept the field and took the top spot as champion.
