GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - Filled with traditions that date back over 60 years, homecoming week, as at any high school, is a non-stop flurry of activities. Gridley High School is no different.

Each day of the week, students are encouraged to show their Bulldog spirit and dress for “spirit days” reflecting the year’s theme, Dr. Seuss. Teachers and staff members participated along-side students, donning outfits-based books by Dr. Seuss, also the inspiration behind each class’s floats.

Float building can be one of the most fun and challenging aspects of homecoming week. Rookie freshman typically have no idea what they are doing or how to tackle the project, while sophomores and juniors tend to have more confidence. Seniors, however, have built up their skills and through trial and error over their 4-year high school career, know exactly how to put together a winning float.

Immediately after the final bell on Friday, a caravan of trucks and cars ferrying sport teams, bands, other high school students and finally each class’s float congregate in front of the high school. It is in preparation for the highly anticipated Homecoming Parade through downtown Gridley, where the community would get its first glimpse at the hard work that went into each class’s float. The GBPD department aids the homecoming revelers by blocking off parts of the parade route and escorting the floats and student-laden vehicles across highway 99.

Although the floats were judged Thursday evening, the floats were not seen again publicly until half-time during the Varsity football game Friday night. At that time, along with the announcement of this year’s Queen and King, which went to miss Chloe Cahoon and mister Selso McTygue, the winning float was announced. This year’s win went to the Sophomores with their rendition of the Lorax. Great job guys!
