BIGGS, CA (MPG) - Biggs High School football was back in action Friday, August 30th, for their season opener at Del Kalbach stadium with a revealing of their brand new grandstands and press box. In August of 2016, a fire broke out destroying the press box and a portion of the bleachers. In honor of the revealing, Biggs High School welcomed back Wolverine alumni from six previous championship football teams. After the junior varsity game and during varsity warm-ups, alumni football players and cheerleaders were invited down to the football field to be honored with their championship banners.

The teams honored were the 1988 and 1989 state champions (10-0 and 11-0), the 1997 MVL Champions (8-2), the 2001 MVL Champions, the 2002 SVL Co-Champions, and the 2016 MVL Champions (10-3).

During halftime of the varsity football game, alumni cheerleaders performed a dance routine with the current cheerleaders.

On the football field the Wolverines took on the visiting Braves of Hamilton City for the first game of the 2019 season. In a pre-game dialogue with varsity starting quarterback Gregg Slusser, he said he felt comfortable, ready to go for the game. And he showed it on the field. The maturity and poise displayed in his first varsity start for the high school junior was that of a seasoned veteran. After a blocked field goal the Wolverine offense stepped onto the field for their first offensive series. After marching down the field about 80 yards, junior running back Shavon Green punched it in from half a yard out for the first score of the season. The Wolverines then converted on the two-point conversion with a pass from Slusser to Green to take an 8-0 lead. Green would later return a punt from inside the Wolverines 20 yard line and take it inside the Braves 5 yard line to set up a Camren Jackson touchdown run. A sweet shovel pass from Slusser to Jackson for 18 yards set up a 15 yard rushing touchdown for Slusser in the second quarter. Shavon Green would put the Wolverines up big with another touchdown run of 4 yards later in the second quarter. The Wolverines would capitalize again with 2.2 seconds left on the clock with a touchdown pass from Slusser to Jackson to take a 33-0 lead into halftime. Shavon Green would continue his dominance on the field with an 80 yard kickoff return for the score to start the second half.

That would be the final score of the game and the Wolverines would go on to win by a score of 40-0. Biggs will host Esparto on Friday, September 6th, at 7:30PM.
