As we have settled into our new office and have a totally different view, we get used to being so close to the downtown businesses and actually being one.
Improvements on our block, between our building and the theatre make it look like progress is in the works. To have the theater finally renovated so that the front area does not leak during the winter months is a huge accomplishment. Maybe it will be able to be used in the not to distant future.
Many cities find themselves concerned with their dwindling downtown areas and ours is no exception. I can remember the days of being able to buy clothes at such downtown establishments as JC Penney and Brown and Company.
Gone are the days of Western Store on the corner of Kentucky and Spruce where my first red bicycle came from and Ambrose Gas Station where my parents would visit regularly at the corner of Vermont and Hazel.
The Bronze Cue and of course Baker's Cafe were great hotspots, whether it was for coffee in the morning (where Bill used to go every day to find out what was happening around town), or for lunch and dinner.
Here are just a few of the items that can be purchased in our downtown these days.
Stylish purses, tutus, children's games, baby clothes, jewelry, women's clothing, mens sweats and sweatshirts, fresh pie and brownies, calzones, dollar items, chicken caesar salads, floral arrangements,
personalized aprons or hats, family photos, hair cuts and perms, pizza, goblets, truffles, tri tip and ribs, CD's and money markets, tax returns, televisions, gasoline and auto repairs.
Of course for those looking for large recreational items such as ATVs, motorcycles and their accessories, can find these and other exciting merchandise just a few blocks away.
The Gridley Museum is an added bonus to downtown in the Veatch Building where Clarice Dukes Fashions was when I was growing up. The museum holds so many wonderful things that take people back to the past, whether it be a menu from The Country Kitchen or milk bottles from local dairies long gone.
If you want to relive your past, check out the museum to go back in time. There are many years of Gridley High School yearbooks for those looking to reminisce and of course a lot of wonderful photographs.
The Gridley Chamber of Business Improvement District are both located downtown and would love to be able to help fill the vacant buildings.
The City of Gridley has recently received word that they are to receive a $100,000 Cal Trans Downtown Design and Mobility grant for review and design to revitalize the downtown.
A public meeting will be held in the near future where merchants and residents can help plan what they would like to see for our downtown.
A Community Action Meeting will be held Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at 5:30 p.m., at the Gridley Recreation Building, 194 Washington Street in Vierra Park and the public is invited to come hear what is the latest information for special projects, organizations and businesses.
