The American Association of University Women of Gridley held their first meeting of 2012 with the Oroville AAUW Branch. Members traveled to Oroville for a co- meeting on Saturday, January 7. Don McNelis, Superintendent of the Butte County Office of Education, was the guest speaker.
McNelis, with 40 years of experience as an educator, provided many interesting facts and figures on the “direction of education”. Funding, school comparisons within the county and state, charter schools and accountability were topics that were covered. Following McNelis’ talk, members had no problem participating in the question and answer portion.
Anna DeVore, President of the Oroville AAUW Branch, gave information on the up-coming Education project, “Career Trek”. This event provides an opportunity for eighth grade girls and their parents to attend Butte College on January 21. Throughout the day, a number of professional women will present workshops outlining their “careers”. Gridley, Oroville, Chico and Butte College are responsible for this informative event.
