The routines are the same. Sweep and mop the mats. Warm-ups followed by practicing moves over and over again until they are second nature. The difference for the Gridley High School wrestling program is the location. After years of lugging around their mats to different locations ranging from Farmers Hall to the school cafeteria, the Gridley wrestling program has found a home building for its program. The Sportsman's Expo building on the Butte County Fairgrounds is now the new home for both the Bulldog and youth wrestling programs.
“It is nice to know we don't have to roll up the mats at the end of the day anymore,” said Gridley head coach Brannon Byrne. “Sean Earley and the Butte County Fair stepped up and offered the use of the building this summer, and knowing this could become our home, and we wouldn't have to work around basketball and other events it was a no-brainer to make the move.”
The Sportsmans Expo was originally built as a horse barn, according to Earley, and while it is certainly smaller than Farmers Hall, spectators will be right on top of the action when Gridley hosts its first meet, Wednesday, January 18 at 6 p.m. For practices, three mats are laid side-by-side in the middle of the long, narrow hall, but for matches, the layout will be different, giving it more of a arena setting with seating surrounding a single mat, while a warm-up mat will be placed in the back of the building.
“We will surround the mat with bleachers for matches, since only a single mat is used.” said Byrne. “While the bleachers we have aren't big, spectators will be right on top of the action, and it should make for a great atmosphere.” For the full story please pick up a 1/11/12 edition of The Gridley Herald.
