Following a superb regular season (15-2, 9-0), the Live Oak tennis team earned many of the top seeds in this weekend's Sacramento Valley League tournament. The Lady Lions received four of the top eight singles seeds, and the first and fourth seeds in doubles.
Live Oak's No. 1 player Jennifer DeWitt (9-0 in SVL) earned the top seed as expected, and No. 2 Daniela Dumitras (8-0) earned the second seed after beating Colusa's No. 1 in the regular season finale.
Alora Sutcliffe (9-0) earned the fifth seed, Fermina Chavez (9-0) earned the seventh seed, Melissa Anderson (8-0) earned the 11th seed, and Kayla Morris (14-0 overall) earned the 15th seed. Lucero Topete, Jewel Wise and Crystal Rodriguez will also compete in the singles tournament.
In doubles, DeWitt and Dumitras (6-0 in SVL) are the top seed, while Sutcliffe and Chavez (7-0) are fourth. Anderson and Topete, and Rodriguez and Andrea Long are the other two competing doubles teams.
The top five singles players and top three doubles teams advance to the northern section tournament on Saturday, October 31.
Live Oak hosts the SVL tournament this Friday at 8:30 a.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Yuba City Racquet Club.
Volleyball
Sutter 3, Gridley 1
In four close games, the Gridley volleyball team fell to Sutter 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 18-25, 20-25) on Tuesday night to go to 14-2 overall this season and 4-2 in the Butte View League.
Kacy Blenn led the team with 12 kills, while Sheena Ruggirello had eight, McKenna Cox had six, and Lawna Sannar and Carolann Warren each had two.
Cox led Gridley with five aces and four blocked shots, while Ruggirello chipped in the team's other two aces, Blenn had three blocks and Mallory Walton had one.
Against the hard hitting Huskies, Mimi Waller had a season high 23 digs, Blenn had 20, Warren had 11, Ruggirello had 10 and Teryn Mathews had nine.
