Hosting the Sacramento Valley League singles and doubles championships, the Live Oak girls tennis team continued their dominating season by advancing all five singles players and two of three doubles teams to the section tournament. No. 3 Alora Sutcliffe won the SVL singles title, while the No. 1 team of Jennifer DeWitt and Daniela Dumitras won the doubles title.
Six of the eight girls in the quarterfinals were from Live Oak and DeWitt, Sutcliffe, Melissa Anderson and Fermina Chavez advanced to the semifinals.
Sutcliffe upset No. 1 DeWitt in the semis and beat Chavez in the finals to win the singles title.
All four semifinalists advance to the section tournament, and in the out bracket for fifth place, freshman Lucero Topete beat Willows' No. 1 and teammate Kayla Morris. Topete beat Colusa's No. 1 to advance to the section tournament.
DeWitt and Dumitras won four matches over the two days to take the championship, while Live Oak's No. 2 team of Sutcliffe and Chavez beat the the No. 3 team of Anderson and Topete to advance as well.
Vasquez, Canada reach title game
Gridley's No. 2 Tina Vasquez beat No. 1 Skylee Canada in the Butte View League championships. Because all the BVL schools' number ones were seeded first, the matchup unfortunately came for Gridley in the first round. Vasquez advanced to the semifinals before losing to Orland's No. 2.
In doubles, Vasquez and Canada won three times to reach the championship match, where they lost to Orland's No. 1 doubles team.
After finishing second in the BVL, the Lady Bulldogs will play at Live Oak, and the winner will advance to the section championship on Wednesday afternoon.
Volleyball
Gridley 3, Las Plumas 0
The Bulldogs swept the Thunderbirds (25-15, 25-9, 25-9) to improve to 15-12 overall and 5-2 in the BVL. McKenna Cox led the team with 13 kills, while Kacy Blenn had eight, Mallory Walton had five, Sheena Ruggirello had three, and Stephanie Hardin, Carmen Montero, Teryn Mathews and Carolann Warren each had one.
Mathews led Gridley with three of their seven aces. Ruggirello had two, Warren and Lawna Sannar had one.
Cox and Walton each had one block. Mimi Waller had eight digs.
