Sometimes a story comes across on e-mail, and you just have to stop what you are doing and take a closer look. While I typically read all my e-mails throughout the day, many are discarded as ads, or placed in a file for future reference. Every so often, though, a story comes across that deals with such happiness you have to stop what you are doing and investigate.
Such is the case of the story of Casper the horse. Upon arriving at Wheeler Ranch and Feed in Biggs, I was immediately greeted by a beautiful white Arabian horse, Casper. While I knew from the information I had received that this was indeed the horse I had read about, it filled my heart with happiness to see what appears to be a healthy, happy horse watching me attentively as I walked into the store.

The game of golf is founded on a concept of sharing knowledge and the old adage that you keep the enjoyment of the game by giving it away. Imagine this: It's 350 years ago, and a Scottish sheep herder is kicking a small ball out on the links.

Parents of high school baseball players, remember when your son came to you with the story of the new high-tech weapon of baseballl destruction, the composite bat? The Easton Stealth, Miken Freak, and Demarini Voodoo to name just a few. You were told how it was a mandatory part of their future playing career, and how they would never keep up without the latest technology. Aluminum was old news. Remember how you gasped audibly when yu saw the $300+ price tag? But you bit the bullet anyway, because your son had to have the same equipment as their rivals at Sutter, Wheatland, East Nicolaus, etc. Well, I have horrifying news for you, especially if you bought your bat within the last year. News you most definitely don't want to hear, but you need to hear. So remember, don't shoot the messenger, because I am also one of the above described parents.

If you have grown up a New York Yankee fan, this past week has not been easy. I am not talking about the team's play on the field. The Yankee's headed into the All-Star break with the best record in baseball, and the lead in the American League Eastern Division. What I am referring to is the passing of two legends of Yankee lore who never played the game. Bob Sheppard passed away on July 11, 2010, and George Steinbrennjer on July 13, 2010. What is unusual about these Yankee greats is the fact neither one ever donned the pinstripes and led the Yankee's to World Series glory, but for many Yankee fans, as well as baseball fans in general, these two men were as synonomous with the Yankees as Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and Joe Dimaggio.

Bigg's Elementary students spent last week participating in Play Week!, a part of the Network for a healthy California Power Play! Campaign's Power Up Your Summer Challenge. Each day the kids tracked the amount of time they spent being active, and at the end of four days, the 60 kids were hoping to have over 18,000 minutes of active play altogether. The point of the week long program was to teach kids the importance of being active as well as eating healthy. Kids were guided through many different activities including dancing, hula-hoop, jump rope, and many other active games.
The program will culminate with a healthy celebration to be held at Biggs Elementary school Thursday, July 8. There will be many fun activities and healthy snacks provided. For more information on the celebration, contact Robin Swanson at 530-693-1719.

In 2003, shortly after the 50th anniversary of the Gridley Invitational Basketball Tournament, tournament director Chris McIntire, following the lead of his brother Brad, then the head basketball coach at Yuba City High School, began using advertisements in the GIBT program to help raise money for improvements for the basketball program. The first idea being a make-over of the floor in Farmer's Hall. Fast forward seven years. By the end of the 2010 tournament, local businesses have donated over $30,000 to the GIBT.
As a result, and with the tireless efforts of many, the fruits of the tourney's fund-raising efforts are being seen, thanks to the beautifully restored floor and mural recently completed at Farmer's Hall.
