Roads throughout Siskiyou County are in varying degrees of disrepair.
Roads throughout Siskiyou County are in varying degrees of disrepair. For example, one road that needs repairing is the Anderson Grade Road, many commercial trucks and trailers must come up and down from small town businesses and power line workers. This is not just a matter of comfort, but a matter of safety. Public roads are a leading cause in fatal automobile accidents and need to be better maintained. Almost 42,000 people die in automobile accidents, 22,000 of these deaths are due to bad road conditions.
A bad road is caused by natural events, such as rains and floods, and caused by unnatural events, such as every day driving. Cracks and potholes create hazards for drivers and pedestrians. People will swerve potholes which could cause them to hit a person walking on the side of the road, or even cause a head on collision with someone in the other lane. Cracks and potholes need to be filled in or part of the road replaced. If foliage is overgrown or a sign has fallen down, accidents are going to happen. Say a stop sign has fallen down or is hidden, someone could just drive straight through and be t-boned. What happens if a speed limit sign is not visible? You could be a danger to school zones or children at home outside playing, or even be pulled over and receive a ticket from a sign you never saw. Counties and states need to do routine checks on public maintained roads to keep all drivers and pedestrians safe.
In Siskiyou County public road funding is $9 million annually, according to the Siskiyou County website. This money is used to patch cracks and potholes in the main streets of Yreka, but all of the secondary roads are a secondary priority. Funding is a problem for fixing the public roads and not helping to stop road accidents caused by faulty roads. More people in our community need to be informed about how bad roads affect driving and accidents, and how it is necessary to fix them and make our roads a safer place to drive.
Our public county roads need to be fixed so they are safer to drive on. The better the roads, the less the accidents and fatal crashes.
