Lois Elizabeth Myer Groff, 94, of Gridley, California, passed away peacefully with family present on June 28, 2010 following a recent stroke.
Lois was born in Somerset, Indiana, on April 7, 1916, the daughter of Charles and Tressa Myer, the second eldest of 8 children.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul, in July 1990.
Lois is survived by her sister Ruth Liskey, of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; daughters Sandra Boeger, and husband Michael, of Gridley, and Linda Haines, and husband Simon, of Sacramento; grandchildren Jeffrey Boeger, and wife Pat, of Chicago, Monica Boeger Terry, and husband Frank, of Gridley, Katherine Boeger, of Oroville; great-grandsons Michael and Dylan Terry, of Gridley; and many nieces and nephews.
Lois was always devoted to her family; she was greatly loved and cherished, and will be sorely missed.
As a very young girl, Lois moved with her family from Indiana to North Dakota, then to Washington state, where she lived until she finished high school and attended community college.  In 1935 Lois moved with her family to La Verne, California, where she then attended La Verne College, graduating in 1938.
Lois and Paul were married in Long Beach, on April 4, 1941, in a double wedding ceremony with her elder brother Everett and his bride, Miriam.   Lois and Paul moved to Gridley in 1944 to start a co-operative farm with several of their friends from college.
In 1949, Lois was hired by the Biggs School District to teach the first kindergarten class offered by the district; she continued teaching kindergarten for ten years before moving to other grades.  She retired from teaching in 1976.
A dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher, Lois was also an active member of the Live Oak Church of the Brethren.  She loved to vacation with extended family and friends at Lake Tahoe, enjoyed camping and traveling, and was a gracious hostess when entertaining at her home on the outskirts of Gridley.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at “The Gardens”, in Yuba City, for their devotion and loving care during the last year of Lois’s life, as well as to express our appreciation for the excellent support provided by Fremont-Rideout Hospice in her last weeks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Lois Groff Memorial Fund, Live Oak Church of the Brethren, 1990 Archer Avenue, Live Oak, California 95953; or to the University of La Verne, Literacy Specialist Scholarship, 1950 3rd Street, La Verne, California, 91750-4401.
A Celebration of Lois’s life will be held at the Live Oak Church of the Brethren, on Sunday, July 25, 2010, at 3 p.m.
