A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 4:00 P.M. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Gridley for Gene Smith, 79 of Gridley, California.  He passed away Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, California of natural causes.

Gene was born September 7, 1930 in New Hope, Arkansas.  He was a long time resident of Gridley having attended local schools and graduated from Gridley High School, Class of 1948. 

He was the owner and operator of Gene Smith Trucking in Gridley and was renowned for his restored 1949 Peterbilt truck, “El Turbo”.  He enjoyed collecting and showing classic cars and trucks.  He was a life long member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and served as a Deacon.  He was also a member of the Historical Truck Society.  He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 daughter, Kathy Smith and 1 grandson, Matthew Ford.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Hilda Smith of Gridley, CA; 1 son, Randy Smith of Biggs, CA, and 2 daughters: Connie Sanford & husband Ray of Yuba City, CA and Robin Ford of Gridley, CA.  He is also survived by 1 brother, Joel Smith & wife Betty of Gridley, CA; and 5 grandchildren.

Pastor Dave Dordevic of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Gridley will officiate at the service.
Private internment will be held at Gridley-Biggs Cemetery.

Contributions to the Feather River Adventist School, 27 Cox Lane, Oroville, CA  95965 are suggested by the family.

Arrangements are entrusted to Gridley-Block Funeral Chapel.
