Gridley Unified School District Superintendent Clark Redfield announced his upcoming retirement in August at the district board of trustees meeting last Wednesday evening.

Redfield came to Gridley in April 2003 and began at his position in July. Redfield served as Superintendent eight years, which is considerably longer than several in his position before.

Al Keller retired in July 2003 after two and-a-half years. The Gridley Unified School District hadn’t had a superintendent longer than two years since Mr. Underhill and Mr. Fisk until Redfield came on board.

Gridley was Redfield’s first job as a Superintendent after working as an assistant superintendent at Dry Creek Unified School District (where he also served as principal) and Rescue Unified School district in El Dorado County. He served as Principal at Stockton Unified, and as an administrator/assistant principal at the Alameda County Office of Education. He taught industrial arts for five years.

All total Redfield has worked in education 39 years and stated he will miss the kids the most.

“I will miss the campus visits I do each week. I could still come visit but it wouldn’t be the same, not being actually involved in their work,” Redfield said. He also said he will miss the day-to-day interaction with the staff.

The Board of Trustees is a great board that allows the superintendents to do their job. They are a blessing,” he said.

Since he and his wife Cindy moved here from Colfax, Redfield has been involved in much more than the School District.

He has served as Secretary of Gridley Rotary Club several years and is Secretary of the Biggs-Gridley Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees.

Redfield will serve as a consultant for the school district as Principal Chris McIntire transitions into his new job as Superintendent effective August 20, 2010, the day after Redfield is officially retired.

“The teachers are doing a good job. We have a great teaching and classified staff who make my job easy to do,” Redfield said.

Of course golf is in the horizon for Redfield, more than he has been able to do on weekends no doubt. Besides golf, he will enjoy spending time with his three grandchildren who also live here. He would also consider other education opportunities such as an interim superintendent for other districts should the need arise. He and Cindy will do some traveling also.

“This has been the best job I’ve ever had, bar none,” he said.
