Many tears were flowing Saturday night as the Gridley Area Chamber of Commerce saluted community members at the 48th Annual Community Awards and Installation Banquet held at the Moose Lodge.
Master of Ceremonies Mike Dahl was once again proficient at his task as he kept the agenda moving through the Installation of the 2012 Chamber Board of Directors to the presentation of awards.
Pastor Rick Cunningham gave the invocation followed by the flag salute by Boy Scouts of America, Troops 24, 42 and 48 who were presented with the Organization of the Year award for 2011 because of the endless tasks and projects they complete. Scout Masters Justin Sannar, Jeff Adams and Michael Hepworth were on hand to accept on behalf of their troops along with Gary Sannar who serves as advisor for Troop 24.
The list of accomplishments for the troops is very extensive but their work in assisting the Sacred Heart and Presbyterian Food closets by collecting food door-to-door twice a year must be mentioned besides the countless hours of work performed to develop Railroad Park. The Boy Scouts are responsible for the beautiful American flags being displayed in Downtown Gridley for each patriotic holiday. Current Eagle Scout projects underway include the Community Gardens project, the construction of an amphitheater at the Liberty Ward Pavilion and landscaping at Gridley High School.
Mayor Jerry Fichter performed the installing duties for the 2012 Chamber Board of Directors. Cathy Mills will serve as President in her second term (third total), joined by Vice President Anita Jacquot, Treasurer Berry Bonds and Directors Kirsten Storne-Piazza, Bob Trueax, Kari Wheeler, Brad Evans, Windy Hernandez and Kaylee Ballou.
Outgoing Director Aaron Wood was presented with a plaque by Mills for his years of service to the board.
Last year's McCaughan Award winner, Bonnie Schnepel presented the award to Larry and Ann Isaacson who were very instrumental in the Gridley High School Band's trip to Hawaii for the Pearl Harbor 70th Anniversary. The couple were honored for their tenacity and constant labor in making travel arrangements for the 80 students and 26 chaperones, no small feat. They also were credited for the vast amount of publicity through area newspapers and television stations because of their drive to make sure that the necessary $125,000 was raised.
