With the state budget finally passed, the Gridley Unified School District sent out layoff notices to teachers and employees, reducing 7.8 full-time equivalent teaching positions. Some received layoff notices, while others will have a reduction of their hours.
The reduction, approved at last week's board meeting, is based on massive education funding reductions by the state. The individuals were notified based on staffing needs at each site and criteria approved by the Board of Trustees.
The reduction could be altered in a positive way after the district receives clarification on their flexibility and the federal stimulus package.
An administrative assignment change was also approved at the meeting, with Sycamore Middle School Principal Jim Walters and Alternative Education Principal Chris McCormick swapping positions, effective for next school year.
The board approved two contracts, one with Durham Pentz Truck Center and another with TBS Mobile Services for repair and maintenance of district vehicles. The cost will be funded from the district transportation account.
The board also approved the second interim budget, which had to be completed by March 15 despite possible changes afterward. The second interim reporting period covers November 1, 2008 through January 31, 2009. The county office must certify to the state that the district can meet its financial obligations for the next three years by March 15, but the next board meeting isn't until Wednesday, March 18.
