Rachel Dhillon may be of small stature but her attitude more than makes up for it upon meeting her for the first time.
Rachel will turn 100-years-old on September 22, 2011, but you wouldn't believe she is even close to that age by her appearance and her spunk.
Arjhan Dhillon is her third husband and they have been married eleven years after meeting at a home for senior citizens in Yuba City.
Arjan is just 79 years of age and enjoys taking Rachel out for a drive and out to dinner. He was a farmer in the Sutter area before retiring and now the two enjoy playing dominoes and checkers together.
They moved to Gridley when they married because she attended Lighthouse Tabernacle Church and had lived here previously for about five years. She has lived in this area off and on for the past 20 years including some time in Live Oak.
As a child, Rachel grew up in Georgia, working on many types of farms doing every kind of work from cutting cross ties, plowing fields, digging wells, cleaning ponds, building houses, you name it.
She was married at 18, and when she and her first husband had two of their four children, they walked from Georgia to Bakersfield, CA, with a horse and buggy, finding work along the way to get them to their destination.
Now, Rachel is content to work around her house in the mornings before either going for a walk or going for a ride with Arjan.
Her favorite places to eat are HomeTown Buffet and Yuba Buffet in Yuba City.
Some memories are of course fuzzy for Rachel, but many things seem to be easily remembered.
She went through the third grade in school and said she only went that long to keep her Daddy out of trouble.
She claims she has done all kinds of work possible, but mainly house cleaning and cleaning at motels over the years.
Arjan stated she has always liked helping people, especially when sick, something she still does.
The couple enjoys walking over to the Gridley Recreation Senior Center for the camaraderie and lunches.
Rachel has ten grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren.
The Dhillon's will celebrate Rachel's 100th with family members coming to see her.
