There are four seasons for football fans.

The preseason.

The regular season.

The postseason.

And the offseason.

For our area prep football teams, it’s been a long offseason, followed by a brief preseason.

But the regular season has arrived.

Biggs and Live Oak open the 2018 regular season tonight, both hitting the road. Biggs will travel to Hamilton, while Live Oak is at Wiliams.

Last year, Hamilton blew out the Wolverines at Biggs, 62-28. The Wolverines went on to a 7-5 record and a trip to the NSCIF Division 5 semifinals.

Live Oak, meanwhile, lost to Williams in Live Oak, 49-6 to start the 2017 season.

Gridley, as usual, has chosen to take its bye in Week 1. That works out well for the Bulldogs, because they have a lot of players involved in ag activities and this week is Butte County Fair week.

Second-year Gridley coach Matt Kemmis said he actually likes the extra week to prepare for the season opener.

And while it’s sometimes nice to have a breather during the season to nurse nagging injuries, Kemmis said he likes playing the season straight through.

“If you’re rolling, a bye can stop your momentum,” Kemmis said.

The Bulldogs open the 2018 season next Friday night at the Boneyard against Paradise.
