On Saturday, May 5, 2018, at 11:11 p.m., 43-year-old John Gieck of Sacramento was driving a 1995 Camry southbound on Highway 99 north of Ord Ranch Road with front seat passenger Kayla Race, 29, of Sacramento.
Frania Houchin, 32, was driving a 2017 Toyota Rav 4 with Sofia Ramirez, 64, of Chico as her front seat passenger and Isidro Ramirez, 68, of Chico in the backseat. This vehicle was traveling northbound on Highway, north of Ord Ranch Road.
The third vehicle, a 2015 Toyota Rav 4, driven by Sally Grant, 32, of Carmichael, was southbound, directly behind the 1995 Toyota Camry. The collision occurred when Gieck allowed his vehicle to cross over the center line into the path of oncoming traffic.
The left front of Gieck's vehicle collided into the 2017 Toyota Rav 4. Grant had no time to react and the front of the 2015 Toyota Rav 4 collided into the 2017 Toyota Rav 4. After the collision, Gieck and Race were located hiding in the Gridley-Biggs Cemetery by Butte County Sheriff's Deputies and the California Highway Patrol. Gridley-Biggs Police Officers assisted with traffic control. Alcohol was considered a factor in this collision. Gieck was arrested and booked at the Butte County Jail for driving under the influence causing bodily injury, driving on a suspended license from a DUI conviction, gross vehicular manslaughter and hit and run.
Ramirez succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the collision. Houchin received minor injuries and was transferred to Oroville Medical Center. Ramirez suffered from moderate injuries and was transported to Enloe by Butte County EMS.
