Coach Elmer Brock’s 2018 Gridley High School softball team is coming along nicely early in the 2018 season.

The Bulldogs are just 3-4 so far this season, but Brock likes what he sees from his team.

“We’re learning how to win,” Brock said during as a recent practice as the Bulldogs got ready for this week’s Spring Break.

Gridley is 2-1 at home in 2018 and just 1-3 on the road.

Last week, the Bulldogs fell behind at Marysville, 9-0 early before rallying with five late runs in a 9-5 loss.

The Bulldogs have just five seniors.

At the plate so far this season, the Bulldogs are led by junior Isabel Castillo, who is hitting .429 with nine hits and nine RBIs. Senior Lauren Erickson is hitting a torrid .500, with 10 hits. She has two doubles and two triples, as well as three RBIs.

The Bulldogs are getting good pitching, with sophomore Haley Nichols (1-2, 1.87 ERA) and junior Karsyn Alcantar (2-3, 1.72 ERA).

Brock would like to see more offense: The Bulldogs are averaging just 7.7 runs per contest so far this season.

The Bulldogs host their own tournament this weekend. They will face Willows at 1 p.m. Friday.
