Way back when, in the 1960's to be exact, Red Suspenders Day began as a salute to our volunteer firemen complete with many sidewalk sales.
A different theme is chosen by the Gridley Area Chamber of Commerce each year and the board is very excited about this year's theme, "All Fired Up For Our Firefighters."
Local Firemen are involved in the planning and organization of this two day affair each year and their volunteerism is widely appreciated by the Chamber of Commerce itself.
The firemen compete in the annual "Guns 'N Hoses" the Friday night before the big day, this year being Friday, May 18, 2018.. The game starts at 6 p.m., at Vierra Park in Dick Jones Field. This is a great way to end an otherwise busy day for the police and fire as they always help pick up "criminals" for the Unjustice Court at Rotary Park in between their regular calls for service. Unjustice Court is from 10 a.m., to 2 p.m., and if you would like someone "arrested" and transported either in a police car or fire engine please call the Chamber office at 846-3142.
Many great activities are planned for Saturday, May 19, 2018 starting with the annual Little League Pancake Breakfast at Railroad Park from 7 to 10 a.m. Many food trucks will be on hand for those who are looking for lunch following the parade and they will be located near the vendors on Hazel Street from 8 a.m., to 3 p.m. The annual Classic Car Show will be held on Kentucky Street from 8 a.m., to 1 p.m., and the always entertaining Bed Races will be at 10 a.m., on Virginia Street followed by the pie eating contest put on by Children's Hope Foster Family Agency.
The parade starts at 11:00 a.m., followed by music by the very popular band "Country Mile" in Daddow Park from noon to 3 p.m. Fireman's games will begin at 1 p.m., at Rotary Park where all of the children's activities will be located at the same time as Pinewood Derby races which will be held at Railroad Park.
The Gridley Museum will host their annual Tri-Tip Dinner (Dine-In or Take-Out) on Kentucky Street for just $20 per person and tickets are available at the museum or from any board member.
