It’s been a pretty good year for the Gridley High School boys and girls basketball teams.
Both squads are headed to the playoffs, and both have won the Butte View League titles for 2017-18.
The Bulldog basketball teams wrap up the 2017-18 regular season this week: The girls team traveled to Wheatland for its season finale Thursday night, while the boys were set to host Wheatland Friday night. Senior Night festivities were on the agenda.
For Gridley girls coach Becca McCray, the 2017-18 season has been a bit of a surprise.
But a pleasant one.
“I was expecting this to be a bit of a rebuilding year,” McCray said earlier this week.
It hasn’t worked out that way.
For the Gridley boys, in their third year under coach Chay Dake, a CIF Northern Section title is the goal.
The Bulldogs won the section title in 2015-16.
Quinn Spring and Sam Cota, two members of that team, are assistants on Dake’s staff.
Dake said the key to his team’s success in 2017-18 has been chemistry.
“Guys have embraced their roles,” Dake said.
Dake said senior leadership has made the difference too. Senior Night ceremonies will take awhile this year, with eight seniors on this year’s team.
Both Gridley teams will learn their playoff schedule on Saturday as seeding meetings are held. The playoffs will start next week, with both teams expected to earn a high seed and possibly a first-round bye, with a home playoff game in the second round.
