A select few high school athletes get to take their talents to the next level.

Live Oak’s Leslie Fregoso joined that elite group on Wednesday, as she signed a letter of intent to play women’s soccer at UC-Davis.

A big crowd of students, faculty and coaches was on hand for the brief signing ceremony in the Live Oak gym.

Fregoso, who also plays basketball at Live Oak, is one of the best athletes ever to come out of the school, according to Principal Tony Walton.

Erin Sharp, Fregoso’s club soccer coach with an elite team out of San Juan, said Fregoso is an exciting player who can create on the field.

“Every time she touches the ball, you feel like something special is going to happen,” Sharp said.

Fregoso thanked her friends, family, coaches and teachers for supporting her throughout her high school career.

“This is a dream come true for me,” Fregoso said, sporting a UC-Davis sweatshirt as she donned a UC-Davis cap to make her decision official.

Fregoso was recruited by a number of colleges, but the chance to stay close to home was a key factor in her decision.
