Reading and writing the English language is a complex task that can be quite confusing. We often take for granted the ease in which many of us can read through the newspaper or a menu but what if the words on the page or on the menu were only squiggles and lines to you?
National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) defined literacy as, “the ability to use printed and written information to function in society, to achieve one’s goals and to develop one’s knowledge and potential.” NAAL also recognized that literacy is based on the needs of each individual. According to Catholic Charities of CA 11% or approximately 24,000 of Butte County residents may be struggling with reading and writing at a basic level.
Butte County Library, Literacy Services has been delivering a solution for adults who struggle with reading in our community for 33 years. Literacy Services were established in 1985 to provide individualized literacy services to adults, families and children in Butte County. These services are based on a learner-centered, goal-oriented basis. The heart of the program focuses on basic literacy skills taught by trained volunteer tutors to adults who seek to improve their reading skills.
As one of the adults in the Literacy Services program stated, “the literacy program has helped me become part of my community”. Want to help?
